Who is a person at their core? Is it who they are in a familiar situation? Or is it who they become when they are faced with the unknown?
Is it who you are when you are prepared, or is it who you are when you are caught off guard?
If it is the first half of the sentences, then I am laid-back and fun at my core.
If it is the second half, then I am high-strung and sometimes mean at my core.
At any rate, I need to work on being more consistent.

Good question. I think it's both. Both first and second halves of the question. It's the things that are consistent within both aspects of the two questions. At least, that's how I would define it.
Ah yes, the hidden third option.
